Bing Webmaster Tools Adds Topics Portfolio to AI Performance Reports
Microsoft's Topics Portfolio beta groups Bing AI grounding queries into thematic clusters, reporting topic size, cited sites and opportunity queries — but no click data yet.
- Microsoft launched Topics Portfolio as a beta inside the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools.
- The feature groups grounding queries into thematic clusters such as football, taxes or AI Chatbots.
- The report shows Topic Size, Sites Cited and distinct query counts; opportunity-query volumes appear as ranges, not exact numbers.
- Access requires 'sufficient data' for the site, per Microsoft.
- No click data is included in this release.
Microsoft has launched Topics Portfolio, a beta feature inside the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools. It groups the grounding queries where a site appears into broader thematic clusters, so publishers can measure AI Search presence at the topic level rather than one query at a time.
Krishna Madhavan, Saral Nigam and Vivek Jain of the Microsoft Bing team announced the feature on the Bing Webmaster blog on Tuesday. They described the core mechanic plainly:
"It is called Topics Portfolio, and it groups the grounding queries where your site appears into broader thematic clusters – for example, football, taxes or AI Chatbots – so you can see the shape of your presence across those clusters rather than one query at a time."
The feature shows how presence is distributed across themes, how much demand each theme represents, how competitive each theme is, and where a site has room to grow.
What data does Topics Portfolio report?
The main table carries four columns. Each is confirmed feature documentation from Microsoft, not tool-signal speculation.
- Topic — a broad thematic cluster of related grounding queries where the site appears.
- Topic Size — approximate total citations across all sites for that topic over the selected period, a proxy for AI Search demand.
- Sites Cited — approximate number of sites appearing for queries in the topic, which indicates how crowded the topic is.
- Queries — approximate number of distinct grounding queries in the topic.
All citation volume figures are approximate. In the Top Opportunity Queries view, shown as a separate panel, volumes appear as ranges rather than exact counts.
What are Opportunity Queries?
The feature pairs the portfolio view with a Top Opportunity Queries table. It lists the strongest queries across the entire portfolio where other sites appear and the user's site does not. Microsoft frames it as a fast, cross-topic read on where a site could grow.
A topic-level deep dive is also available. It shows Topic Size, the site's own citations within the topic, and the query count, with the queries themselves split into two tables underneath.
Madhavan reinforced the positioning on LinkedIn:
"AI visibility insights are more useful when you see the bigger picture: where your site is strong, how competitive your content is for each topic, and where you have room to grow. Topics Portfolio brings together new insights, including personalized Opportunity Queries based on real grounding data."
Who gets access?
Access is gated on data volume. The report appears within the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools only if "there is sufficient data for your site," according to Microsoft. Sites with sparse AI citations will not see it. No threshold was disclosed.
What is still missing?
One gap stands out. Topics Portfolio carries no click data. Microsoft confirmed there is no click reporting in this release. Publishers measuring AI-driven traffic downstream of citations will need to wait for a future update, because the current report stops at citation presence, demand and competition.
The beta label also matters. Column definitions describe approximate counts, and the Opportunity Queries ranges signal that Microsoft is still calibrating volume estimates against live grounding data.
What to monitor next
Watch for the beta expanding citation counts into click or referral metrics, and for the sufficient-data threshold to be defined as more sites accumulate Bing AI citations worth clustering.
