Shopify Auto-Enrolls Eligible Stores Into Every New AI Shopping Channel

Shopify's default "Allow Shopify to manage for me" setting has auto-enrolled eligible stores into every new AI shopping channel since Jan. 12, 2026 — including Meta's Muse at launch, with zero fees for now.

  • Shopify has auto-enrolled eligible stores into every new AI channel since Jan. 12, 2026; the default setting put merchant products into Meta's Muse on its Sept. 8, 2026 launch day.
  • Direct checkout (on by default for Meta, Google AI Mode/Gemini and Microsoft Copilot) bypasses the merchant's website, so Google Analytics and third-party pixels do not fire on those orders.
  • Shopify reported Q2 2026 AI-referred sessions grew 197% year-over-year and orders grew 3x; Zuckerberg said Meta expects to take "a very small cut" of Muse transactions over time.

Shopify has been automatically enrolling eligible stores into every new AI shopping channel since Jan. 12, 2026, through a setting called "Allow Shopify to manage for me" — and on Sept. 8, 2026, that default put merchants' products inside Meta's newly launched agent, Muse, the same day it went live.

The setting sits at the top of Sales channels > Agentic in the Shopify admin and stays on unless a merchant switches it off. Shopify's own documentation states the mechanics plainly: "Agentic storefronts channels have access to your products through Shopify Catalog. Direct checkout is activated for the relevant channels. You're auto-enrolled in new agentic storefronts channels."

Shopify's changelog entry for Sept. 8, 2026 confirms how Meta arrived: "Your products are shared with Meta by default through Shopify Catalog." Most of these AI apps pull product data through Shopify Catalog; Google is the exception, reading products from Google Merchant Center.

The default-on distribution also feeds a row labeled "Other channels," which Shopify's help page describes as "Independent developers and startups that are building niche or experimental shopping agents" plus "New third-party partners that have recently gained access to Shopify Catalog for testing." The admin summarizes the group as "Other AI-powered platforms like Perplexity that can surface your products to shoppers."

Not every platform welcomed the arrangement. Amazon blocked Meta's Muse from its store on Sept. 20, 2026 — 12 days after Shopify shared eligible stores' products with Meta. For Shopify merchants, there is currently no such opt-out friction: merchants who verified the channel was on earlier in 2026 now share products with Meta and every entity in the Other channels row.

Direct checkout changes where the sale happens

Shopify calls the in-chat payment flow direct checkout. The customer pays inside a Shopify checkout embedded in the chat app and never opens the merchant's website. It is on by default for qualifying stores on three channels:

  • Meta: stores selling to the United States, Canada or Mexico.
  • Google AI Mode and Gemini: US stores selling to US customers, with a Google Merchant Center account.
  • Microsoft Copilot: stores selling in the US.

ChatGPT handles payments differently, sending customers to the store's own checkout — "your online store checkout in a ChatGPT in-app browser, or in a new tab when customers use ChatGPT web," per Shopify's ChatGPT page.

The checkout split creates a measurement gap merchants should not ignore. When the customer pays inside the chat app, the tracking code on the merchant's website does not run. Shopify says Google Analytics and custom pixels "won't fire" in the Google and Copilot checkouts — only server-side tracking works there — and that third-party analytics pixels "don't fire" in Meta's. Merchants who read revenue in Google Analytics or an ad dashboard rather than the Shopify admin can miss these orders entirely. Shopify still records them: Meta orders "are displayed in your Shopify admin in the same way as for any other sales channel."

Fees are zero today; Meta expects a cut

As of September 2026, Shopify's help pages for ChatGPT, Google, Microsoft Copilot and Meta state that none charges a fee beyond usual payment processing costs, and the merchant keeps full operational responsibility. The Meta page says: "You remain the merchant of record, and you continue to manage fulfillment, returns, and customer service for these orders."

That free arrangement has a stated shelf life, at least for Meta. Mark Zuckerberg, speaking to Alex Heath on the Sources podcast in an episode published Sept. 8, 2026, said of Muse: "the business model over time that we expect is to effectively just take a very small cut of whatever the transaction is," adding that "It'll come from the businesses that they're working with." Google and Microsoft have announced no comparable plan.

What the shopper number actually measures

The shopper count on the Agentic page counts visits from AI chat apps — mostly people who clicked a link in an answer — not purchases agents complete. It matched online store sessions in the reporting tested, and Shopify defines those as "the total number of visits to your online store from an AI channel over a specified time period." A direct checkout never opens the website, so it does not add to the count. The page's sales figure, by contrast, mixes "referral-based sales and sales that happen through direct checkout," which makes the orders list filtered to a specific channel the closest available view of what that channel's checkout actually sold.

The traffic itself is confirmed and material. Shopify reported in August 2026 that in Q2, "AI-referred sessions to Shopify storefronts grew 197% (roughly 3x) year-over-year and orders also grew 3x." No numbers exist yet, from Shopify or anyone else, for purchases agents complete end-to-end inside a chat app.

Controls, with caveats

Merchants can switch off "Allow Shopify to manage for me," which exposes three sub-switches: Shopify Catalog access, Auto enroll new storefronts, and direct checkout. Each channel also gets separate controls — Meta and Copilot each have catalog-access and direct-checkout switches, ChatGPT has only catalog access, and Google has only direct checkout. Turning off catalog access takes effect slowly: Shopify says it can take "up to 7 days before your product data is no longer being shared through Shopify Catalog." Hiding a single product from AI apps requires marking it unlisted, which Shopify warns "also hides the product from sitemaps, search engines such as Google, and your online store search" — a real SEO trade-off.

Given zero fees and default merchant-of-record status, there is little financial reason today to disable the channels. The monthly discipline that matters is filtering the orders list by channel — because that is the number Meta's eventual transaction cut would come out of. Watch what Shopify adds to the channel list next; auto-enrolment means every new AI shopping surface becomes part of your distribution, and your analytics blind spot, the day it launches.
