Google September 2026 Spam Update: Second Wave Hits September 30

A second wave of the Google September 2026 spam update hit sites on September 30, with webmasters reporting vanished Discover traffic and Reddit AI translations surging back across multiple countries.

  • Google announced the September 2026 spam update on September 24, with a rollout of around two weeks — longer than the typical two days for the previous three spam updates.
  • First impact wave hit September 25-27; a second wave hit September 30 and continued into October 1, per tracking tools and webmaster reports.
  • Glenn Gabe reports Reddit AI translations surging back in Italy, Germany, Brazil, France and other countries, after crashing with the May 2026 core update and June 2026 spam update.

Google's September 2026 spam update struck a second wave of sites on September 30, one week after Google announced the update on September 24 and days after the first impact window on September 25 through 27.

The pattern fits what Google said makes this rollout different from its previous three spam updates. Instead of the typical two-day rollout, Google told us this update will take around two weeks to complete. That schedule implies multiple cycles: sites may see impact on a day or two, then relative calm, then another drop on a different set of days. Two or three or possibly more days of visible impact are expected across the full rollout window.

Glenn Gabe, who tracks update volatility closely, wrote on X on the morning of October 1 that the update continues to roll out and that he believes a specific change landed on 9/30. "I received emails from several site owners explaining they saw a huge drop right on 9/30," he wrote. "The update could take up to two weeks to fully roll out so it makes sense there would be various stages involved."

That account is tool-signal and anecdotal evidence, not a confirmation from Google. Google has confirmed only the update itself, its September 24 announcement date, and the roughly two-week rollout timeline. The September 30 attribution rests on tracking data and webmaster reports.

Reddit AI translations surge back

Gabe's October 1 notes included a finding that stands out from the usual update chatter: Reddit's AI-translated pages are surging again in Google results.

He has documented extensively how Reddit's AI translations surged in Google for a long time, then crashed with the May 2026 core update and the June 2026 spam update. Now, with the September 2026 spam update, he says those translations are climbing back. He checked across countries and observed the surge in Italy, Germany, Brazil, France, and other markets.

Gabe raised the open question directly: "So did Reddit complain enough to Google or is this just Google's systems rewarding those translations??" He noted that Google has said AI translation is acceptable if the content is high quality, and left the verdict open — "Stay tuned."

This is tool-based observation and speculation about cause, not a statement from Google.

Webmaster chatter

Forum activity spiked on September 30, with Discover and News traffic the most common complaint on WebmasterWorld:

  • "Discover and News traffic has again vanished."
  • "Discover is currently extremely volatile. It's doing pretty well for half the day, then suddenly it's practically dead. Today is another one of those days where there is traffic, but very little of it. That said, that's normal with an update like this. It's just a bit annoying that my personal feed is full of spam."
  • "Discover vanished."
  • One poster counted at least two other reports of Discover vanishing on September 30 and asked whether anyone had an explanation.

One commenter reported a different pattern tied to seasonality: Semrush volatility changed direction and climbed after dropping, paired with two days of decent conversions — possibly early Christmas sales rather than update-related movement. Another kept it blunt: "Today something happened again. Traffic dead."

What the tools show

Google tracking tools registered elevated volatility on September 30 and into October 1. AWR showed movement, and the Wireboard aggregate chart, which combines multiple tracking tools into a single plot, reflected the same spike. These signals corroborate the timing webmasters reported but do not identify which spam systems Google triggered.

Who is feeling it

Based on the reports, the clearest impact so far falls on sites dependent on Discover and News traffic, which multiple webmasters described as volatile or gone entirely on September 30. Gabe's emails point to site owners seeing sudden ranking drops on that same date. The Reddit translation finding suggests the update is also reshuffling international results, where translated content is again gaining visibility in several European and South American markets.

What to watch

Google's two-week window runs into early October, so more impact days are likely. Monitor whether Google confirms additional phases or completion of the rollout, whether Discover volatility settles as the update finishes, and whether Reddit's AI translations continue their recovery across international results — a question Gabe left explicitly open.
