Google and OpenAI Push Generated Answers Toward Booking

Google and OpenAI have launched generated interfaces in Search and ChatGPT, but their demos still lack merchant inventory, local hours and other website data.

  • Google launched generative UI globally in English in AI Mode on Aug. 19, 2026, and began rolling it into AI Overviews.
  • OpenAI launched Intelligent UI with GPT-6 on Oct. 7, 2026, for most paid ChatGPT plans; Free and Go plans followed Oct. 8.
  • Google reported more than 2.5 billion monthly AI Overviews users and over 1 billion monthly AI Mode users; OpenAI reported more than 1.2 billion weekly ChatGPT users.
  • Neither company has shown merchant inventory, hotel rooms or local-business hours inside a generated interface.
  • At Google Marketing Live in 2025, Google confirmed ads expansion in AI Overviews and tests in AI Mode; it has announced no booking commission.

Google rolled out generative UI globally in English in AI Mode on Aug. 19, 2026, and OpenAI launched Intelligent UI with GPT-6 in ChatGPT on Oct. 7, 2026. Neither announcement has demonstrated a merchant’s own data inside an AI-generated screen.

Generative UI means the AI builds each answer’s screen from charts, buttons, maps or small tools instead of returning text or links.

How large are the audiences?

Google’s June 3, 2026 post, updated Aug. 31, reported more than 2.5 billion monthly active users for AI Overviews and more than 1 billion for AI Mode. OpenAI says more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT each week. Those figures measure the host products, not generated-interface use.

What has Google actually launched?

  • Google first brought generative UI to AI Mode with Gemini 3 on Nov. 18, 2025. AI Mode is the chat-style tab within Google Search.
  • At I/O on May 19, 2026, Google said Search could design custom layouts from interactive visuals, tables, graphs and simulations. It promised those capabilities for everyone in summer 2026, free of charge.
  • The Aug. 19 rollout covered AI Mode globally in English and began rolling into AI Overviews, the AI summaries at the top of Google results. Google’s examples included study aids, custom tools and simulations.
  • Google’s November 2025 post said Gemini writes interactive tool code in real time and adds it to the response. The system uses Google Antigravity, its AI coding tool, and Gemini 3.5 Flash’s agentic coding capabilities.
  • A small-apps feature scheduled for the coming months would let people build apps inside Search, with Search writing the code. A fitness-tracker example would tap fresh, real-time sources including reviews, live maps and local weather, but Google did not identify the review provider.

What did OpenAI add to ChatGPT?

  • OpenAI launched Intelligent UI with GPT-6 on Oct. 7, rolling it out to most paid ChatGPT plans that day and to the Free and Go plans on Oct. 8.
  • ChatGPT can now include graphics, tappable buttons, forms, charts and interactive experiences in the conversation. OpenAI assembles the screens from ready-made components while the answer is still being written.
  • Google describes a different build method: Gemini writes code for interactive tools on the spot, whereas OpenAI composes screens from prepared components.
  • OpenAI’s examples included a Sunday roast timed alongside its recipe, a road trip on a map, the central limit theorem, a bill splitter and a retirement calculator. The company said: “Instead of people adapting to software, software will adapt to people.”
  • The OpenAI announcement mentions web search but says nothing about websites, sources or links back to them.
  • One ChatGPT Plus user reported on OpenAI’s forum that the account showed GPT-6 without Intelligent UI; that single report cannot establish rollout or adoption.

Has website data entered these interfaces?\n

Neither launch shows a store’s product catalog, a hotel’s available rooms or a local business’s hours inside the generated interface. Google’s and OpenAI’s examples draw on information the models already know, not a merchant feed.

A November 2025 Google post promised prominent links to high-quality web content in every response. Those links sit alongside the generated interface; the post did not describe embedding a site’s own data inside it.

Rich results with star ratings or prices do not reveal whether they use generative UI. Direct observation has not established a merchant dataset inside a generated screen, so that capability remains a documented gap rather than a shipped feature.

Could Google become a booking intermediary?

Generated interfaces could keep users inside Google, ChatGPT and any platform that builds them, reducing the need to click through to a website. The Booking.com analogy is a forecast, not an announced Google product: merchants could receive bookings or orders through a Google-controlled screen.

The analysis likens the result to a friendlier version of Backrooms, the internet-horror story A24 turned into a 2026 film: calculators replace empty offices, but users still do not leave.

That leaves a merchant with three choices: wait for Google to deliver bookings or orders, develop channels it owns, or do both. The decision does not require a confirmed commission product.

Paid placement is confirmed. At Google’s 2025 Marketing Live event, the company said it was expanding ads in AI Overviews and testing ads in AI Mode.

A commission, a fee for a completed transaction, remains speculation. The analysis says there is effectively zero chance Google is not considering commissions, paid placements or both, but labels that a hunch. Either model would put Booking.com’s business model on a results page; Google has announced no commission or transaction fee.

Can Gemini 4 improve the generated tools?

On Alphabet’s July 22, 2026 earnings call, CEO Sundar Pichai said Google had started training Gemini 4. Asked how Google would close its coding gap, he said: “Coding and agentic coding is an example of that, and I think the teams are very, very focused on it.”

On Sept. 30, 2026, Pichai showed an early version, Gemini 4 Argon, on X and said it performed at the top level in software engineering, based on Google’s own tests.

The analysis infers that a stronger coding model would build better tools. That link remains an inference, while Google’s role in generating the code is a stated product fact.

What should merchants monitor next?\n

Monitor four developments: whether Google’s coming small-apps program or OpenAI’s web-search layer exposes merchant inventory, hotel availability, local hours and identified review sources; whether either company reports generated-interface usage; whether Google tests bookings or commissions; and how Gemini 4 performs after the early Argon demonstration.

The next material signal will be a live transaction or merchant dataset embedded in a generated answer, because that—not another generic layout demo—would turn the interface experiment into a booking platform.
