Generative Engine Optimization Crosses Into Mainstream Business Coverage

business.com has added a Generative Engine Optimization explainer to its reference library, signaling that the SEO-adjacent vocabulary is moving from trade press into general business coverage read by marketing leads and founders.

  • business.com published an explainer titled "What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?"
  • Google launched AI Overviews in the United States in October 2023
  • Trade press coverage of GEO dates to 2024
  • GEO measurement vendors include Profound and Otterly.AI
  • A top-ranked organic page can be absent from the cited sources of an AI-generated answer

Business publisher business.com has added Generative Engine Optimization to its reference library with an explainer titled "What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?", the move a signal that a term previously confined to SEO trade press is now reaching general small-business readers.

Vocabulary migration is how practice changes get bought. When "GEO" surfaces in an outlet read by marketing leads and founders rather than by search analysts, agencies and in-house teams field new RFP questions (requests for proposals) and budget lines.

What does GEO actually mean?

Generative Engine Optimization, abbreviated GEO, names the editorial and structural work a publisher does to be selected and cited by the large language models (the AI systems that power products such as ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and Perplexity) that assemble answers to user prompts.

The acronym mirrors SEO — search engine optimization — and the workflow overlaps: research, drafting, on-page edits, measurement. What differs is the target surface.

SEO chases placement on a ranked results page. GEO chases inclusion inside a generated answer. A page can rank first on Google and never appear inside the answer Google then displays. A page on page two can be the third source a model names. That asymmetry is what makes GEO a distinct practice rather than a rebrand.

Why does a business.com explainer matter?

Trade outlets — Search Engine Land, Search Engine Roundtable, Ahrefs' blog — have covered GEO since 2024. The arrival of the term in a general business reference changes who asks about it.

A marketing lead reading business.com is more likely to ask a vendor "do you do GEO?" than to ask whether the vendor has rebuilt its rank-tracking for AI surfaces. The handoff also changes the framing of every agency pitch deck published in the next two quarters.

What changes for publishers by vertical?

The verticals most exposed are the ones whose traffic depends on long-tail informational queries — health, finance, legal, software comparisons.

Publishers in those categories have reported the steepest citation-share declines as AI Overviews have expanded since Google's October 2023 US rollout. Local businesses and e-commerce category pages have seen less disruption so far, though the boundary has shifted with each subsequent Overview update.

For SEO teams the implication is not that SEO is dead — that framing has been wrong for a decade — but that measurement now needs a second column. Rank position no longer suffices. Citation share inside generative answers, prompt coverage (how often a brand appears across a defined set of queries) and answer-engine share of voice are the metrics GEO vendors — Profound, Otterly.AI, a handful of others — currently sell.

What should readers monitor next?

Three signals will tell practitioners whether GEO hardens into a discipline or remains a label for an unstable surface: the volume of branded "GEO" queries in Google Trends relative to "SEO", the cadence of agency menu changes that list GEO as a discrete service line, and the frequency of Google and Bing updates that change which sources AI answers cite. Watch the ratio of the first over the next two quarters.
