Ahrefs Study of 260M AI Prompts: Reddit Mentions Track AI Visibility Best
Ahrefs analyzed 10,000 brands and 260M AI prompts: Reddit mentions correlate with AI visibility at 0.75, beating press coverage (0.67) and webpage mentions (0.70).
- Reddit mentions correlate with AI visibility at 0.75, the strongest of seven mention types studied.
- Study covered 10,000 US brands and 260 million non-branded AI prompts across ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews.
- A 10x increase in webpage mentions yields only about 3.7x more AI mentions; for Reddit the multiplier is 5.5x.
- Press mentions (0.67) and traffic-weighted mentions (0.70) do not outperform raw webpage mentions (0.70).
- The median brand had just 8 Reddit threads mentioning it; 29% had none.
Reddit mentions correlate with AI brand visibility at 0.75 on the Spearman scale, more strongly than any of six other mention types Ahrefs measured across 10,000 US brands and 260 million non-branded AI prompts. The study, run through Ahrefs' Brand Radar database of roughly 500 million prompts, compared seven off-site mention types against how often the same brand appears in answers from ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews. The working hypothesis — "mentions are the new links" — now has numbers attached. The numbers also show where that slogan breaks down.
Which mention types correlate strongest with AI visibility?
All seven factors scored between 0.59 and 0.75, where 1 would mean brands rank in exactly the same order on both measures. The full ranking, per the study:
- Reddit mentions (in threads ranking in Google): 0.75
- Domain mentions: 0.70
- Webpage mentions: 0.70
- Total traffic of webpage mentions: 0.70
- News article mentions: 0.67
- YouTube mentions: 0.64
- TikTok mentions: 0.60
The spread is narrow, and Ahrefs itself cautions that no mention type should be written off. Still, the Reddit result has a structural explanation, not just a statistical one: Reddit licenses its content to both Google and OpenAI, handing both companies direct access to posts and comments for training and surfacing in AI answers. In Brand Radar, Reddit is currently the second most cited source across all three AI platforms, behind only Wikipedia. That is a confirmed content-licensing fact, not speculation.
Does press coverage carry extra weight?
It does not, according to the data. News article mentions correlated at 0.67, slightly below general webpage mentions at 0.70. Press coverage shows a strong positive correlation, but it appears to carry no more weight than a mention on an ordinary page.
The traffic question produces a similar answer. Webpage mentions and traffic-weighted mentions both scored 0.70, meaning a mention on a high-traffic page appears to win no more AI visibility than one on a low-traffic page. For earned-media planning, Ahrefs' implication is direct: pitch small, niche sites as readily as large publications, and aim for breadth of coverage over big-name placement. Whether a mention on a quiet page truly counts equally in every case — the study measured correlation, not causation — remains untested.
How much AI visibility does a 10x mention increase buy?
Not 10x. A brand with ten times more webpage mentions typically earns about 3.7 times more AI mentions — 1,000 webpage mentions yield roughly 73 AI mentions, while 10,000 yield roughly 273. Going from 1,000 to 10,000 mentions requires 9,000 new pages but adds only about 200 AI mentions. The multiplier runs from 2.2x on ChatGPT to 3.5x on AI Overviews.
Reddit performs better under this measure: a brand with 10x more Reddit mentions tends to get about 5.5x more AI mentions. The typical, median brand in the study had just eight Reddit threads mentioning it, and 29% of brands had none at all. A brand with eight or more Reddit threads sits ahead of half the sample.
Ahrefs flags the causation gap plainly: these are correlations, and the study cannot confirm that more mentions cause more AI visibility. If they do, the practical warning stands — a handful of new mentions will not move AI visibility, and brands should measure progress over months, not weeks.
Is this just a big-brand effect?
Partly, but not entirely. When Ahrefs held brand size roughly constant by comparing brands within search-volume bands, webpage mentions still predicted AI mentions in every band:
- Under 500 monthly searches: 2,452 brands, 0.54 correlation
- 500 to 2K: 2,419 brands, 0.34
- 2K to 10K: 2,595 brands, 0.36
- 10K to 50K: 1,632 brands, 0.40
- 50K+: 902 brands, 0.46
A further breakdown into 50 groups with near-identical search demand held the pattern throughout. The in-band correlations run weaker than the overall 0.70, so brand size explains part of the relationship — but not all of it.
One platform note: ChatGPT tracked off-site mentions slightly less closely than AI Mode or AI Overviews across six of seven factors, with correlations mostly between 0.60 and 0.65. The factors still rank in roughly the same order on all three platforms.
The study excluded brand-named prompts, excluded the brand's own website, and limited Content Explorer matches to brand names of at least five characters to reduce false matches. Watch whether Reddit's licensed-content advantage persists as licensing deals and AI training corpora evolve, and whether press mentions gain weight as AI platforms refine source-quality signals.
